Control of total alkalinity
The total alkalinity of the water is defined by the amount of dissolved carbonates and bicarbonates. The value must be comprised between 80 and 120 ppm, expressed in CaCO3.
The alkalinity has the property of stabilizing the pH of the water (buffer effect).
· For a value < 80 ppm of CaCO3 the water is corrosive and the pH is unstable
· For a value comprised between 80 and 100 ppm of CaCO3 the pH will remain stable
· For a value > 120 ppm of CaCO3 the pH is difficult to regulate, scaling, the water is thrown off balance.
After a correction of the water balance, the alkalinity of the water is the first parameters to be checked and regulated, and then the pH.
Check of the pH
- The water pH indicates an acid or basic condition of the water. It must be held at all times between 7.2 and 7.6.
- If the pH is under the value of 7.2, the water is corrosive; the disinfectants such as chlorine or chlorine generated by electrolysis lose much of their effectiveness
- pH comprised between 7.4-7.6: ideal value.
- pH > 7.6: loss of effectiveness of chlorine or chlorine generated by electrolysis, scaling, unbalanced water, value promoting the growth of algae.
Water hardness
The total hardness of the water is characterized by the quantity of calcium and magnesium. The optimum value is placed between 200 and 250 ppm, depending on the type of pool and the heating equipment.
Our UVShield disinfectant stabilizes the water hardness.
A high hardness value will cause unbalanced water and scale deposits.
Disinfectants
According to the type of disinfectant used, the recommended values must always be implemented and verified.
In case of using our UVShield biocide, the recommended value must be followed, according to the type of installation, its use and the temperature of the water.
Please consult the manual of use of the UV generators or contact our Technical Support Department.
Alternating disinfectants is a guarantee of success. The colonies of microorganisms will be eradicated very easily provided the alternation of disinfectant types is practiced.

Irrespectively of the disinfection used, the pool requires a shock treatment in order to destroy the vegetal and organic organisms, as well as to stress and destabilize the colonies of microorganisms. The shock treatment is guaranteed using a solution of active oxygen.
UVTECH proposes automatic solutions for the shock treatment, adapted to the type of installation. Contact our Technical Support to receive ample information and recommendations.
Algae
The spores developing in the pools are the result of transfers coming mostly from the surroundings of the pool.
The UV generating unit and the use of the UVShield / Oxysteril fight the formation of algae owing to the powerful radiation of UV rays on the hydraulic loop. Nevertheless, the sand filter and the surfaces of the pool are ground for the development of spores.
The absence of dead zones, thorough cleaning, surveillance of the pool walls and the alternation of disinfectants are guarantees of good protection, against the appearance of algae in the pool.
